Research Focus

The research institution ikt with its focus on product, processes, tools and controlling is recognized in the fields of Engineering Design Methodology, Sustainable Product Development and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
Apart from refining and updating more conventional approaches to systematic product development, the institute has a tradition spanning more than four decades of releasing new guidelines for efficient development processes and product strategies.
A scientific approach to the integration of new materials to realize their full potential is one of the more application-oriented domains of ikt. Here, a network of competence has been initiated that focuses on the efficient integration of sandwich materials in hybrid structures. The growing importance of Industrial Design within integrated or interdisciplinary design processes is being met by a dedicated research group and two elective courses that are fuelled by collaborations with renown institutions such as Hongik University, Seoul. As a service to all higher education institutions in the federal state of North Rhine Westfalia, ikt hosts PDM (Product Data Management) services with a maximum capacity of 45,000 users within a project named “ProVerStand”. PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and PDM-related activities include collaborative engineering projects with institutions all over the world, including members of the PACE network (pacepartners.org). The unique ProVerStand infrastructure allows for relevant research conditions close to those of the of global enterprises and has already resulted in a multitude of new methods and tools that support tailored solutions to realize PLM approaches of industrial collaborations.
