PEM - Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components
Head of the Institute
Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Achim Kampker MBA
Field of Study
All subjects of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering as well as all corresponding fields of industrial engineering
Main Focus
Electric vehicle production (especially production of batteries, electric motors and fuel cells) as well as the development and assembly of batteries and entire vehicle concepts
Research Focus
The chair "Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components" (PEM) at RWTH Aachen University stands for forward-looking research and innovation in the field of electromobility. The PEM team decisively develops the production processes of electric vehicles and their individual components. An equally large focus falls on recycling as well as the development and safety of batteries. In all areas, application-oriented research projects are complemented by numerous industrial cooperations.
To this end, the chair draws on three locations:
- "Smart Mobility Solution (SMS) Campus Avantis" on the German-Dutch border, which is considered a nucleus for mobility research of the future;
- the research hall at "Rotter Bruch" for projects on the electrification of large commercial vehicles;
- the electromobility laboratory (eLab) at RWTH Aachen University for research into component production for various applications in e-mobility.
All facilities come together in the "Center for Electromobility Production" (ZEP).
The chair is active in seven research groups:
The Battery Components & Recycling group continues to think about the components of the lithium-ion battery – in a practical way thanks to the affiliated production for test cells and large-format pouch cells. In numerous industry and research projects, the group looks at issues relating to the production and design of materials and other components.
The Battery Engineering & Safety team is dedicated to issues relating to the development of lithium-ion battery systems and their application safety. The mechanical, electrical and thermal design of battery modules and packs, consisting of prismatic, cylindrical or pouch cells, is the focus here.
The Battery Production Management group deals with production planning and optimization to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of battery cell, module and pack production. The group supports manufacturing companies in consulting and planning projects; in research, it is active in areas ranging from digitization to the scalability of plant-side innovations.
The Battery Production Technologies team focuses on topics related to production technology for manufacturing current and next-generation batteries. The spectrum ranges from process planning and design to the design of plant-side optimization and the development of novel production technologies for the batteries of tomorrow.
The E-Mobility Production Engineering group realizes innovative solutions in the overall vehicle integration of alternative drives and storage systems. The focus is on the development and production of modularly adaptable all-electric and hydrogen-based powertrains for commercial vehicles. The spectrum ranges from small municipal vehicles to heavy construction machinery and long-range trucks.
The Electric Drive Production team conducts research into all aspects of production technology relating to electric powertrains. It supports manufacturing companies in the development of products and processes, for example to reduce waste or ensure producibility – from the engine to the integrated vehicle electrical system.
The Fuel Cell: Production Technology and Organization group is concerned with the production technology of PEM fuel cells against the background of mobile applications. The main focus is on the scalability of processes to enable cost reductions for fuel cell technology.
