Certificate of pre-study internship for enrollment
Due to the current situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not mandatory to submit a pre-internship certification as a precondition for enrolment for the upcoming winter semester 2020/2021. Please refer to the following paragraphs for information on making up for the pre-study internship.
This resolution is valid for the study programs "Mechanical Engineering (B. Sc.)", "Business Administration and Engineering: Mechanical Engineering (B. Sc.)", and "Technical Communication with Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering (B. Sc.)".
Before you can enroll at RWTH Aachen for mechanical engineering or business administration and engineering, you must submit proof of completion of an at least six week pre-internship.
At the time of enrollment, we will only check to see if the pre-internship was completed. You do not get credit for it. You will get the certificate of completion back. You will get credit for the pre-internship during the first semester. To do so you must submit a report no later than March 31 to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Internship Office. You can also turn your report in to the mailbox next to the Internship Office.
Please use our guidelines and FAQ´s to format your report.
Does the pre-internship have to contain the entire basic internship?
No The pre-internship can be completed in all areas, even the technical internship. We recommend completing it in the field of the basic internship. The entire basic internship does not need to be covered in the six weeks though, e.g. 3 weeks basic internship 1, 2 weeks basic internship 2, and 1 week basic internship 3 would be sufficient. The remaining areas must be covered during studies.
By when do I need to complete the pre-internship?
If you were admitted to studies without a pre-internship or have only completed part of a pre-internship, you must finish the remaining weeks during your studies. There is not a deadline, for when you must have completed the internship. At least 20 internship weeks must be documented by the time you register your Bachelor thesis. We do not recommend postponing the remaining pre-internship weeks until this time. However you can plan it out as you want.
I don't have a pre-internship. Can I enroll anyways?
If you have not completed a pre-internship, then you should send an email to the Internship Office as soon as you receive your letter of admission. In the email you need to explain why you have not completed a pre-internship.
Please note that the pre-internship can only be deferred for a valid reason. A short-term decision on your part in favour of the course in question, or an unexpected acceptance, is not considered to be a valid reason. However, participation in a voluntary social year or the Federal Voluntary Service, the completion of vocational training or further vocational training, as well as a contractually regulated employment relationship, are accepted. Alternatively, please send us at least five cancellations from different companies (the application should have been made before you received the notification of admission). Please attach your letter of admission to the mail and state your current address as well as your date of birth. After the documents have been checked, you will immediately receive a certificate by e-mail, which you can use to enrol even without proof of a completed pre-internship.
The internship has not yet been completed by the enrolment deadline, what now?
If you are already in the internship at the registration date, please have the internship company issue a certificate stating the duration of the internship and confirming that you have started the internship. This certificate is then sufficient for enrolment at the Student Secretariat.
If you have an internship promise for an internship which is completed by 30.09., please have a provisional certificate issued and present this or a signed internship contract at the time of enrolment.
If the internship has not been completed by 30.09., please scan your contract or a confirmation of the internship as well as your letter of admission and send it by e-mail to the internship office. Please also include your address, date of birth and degree programme in the e-mail. After checking, you will then receive a certificate by post, which you can use to enrol at the Registrar's Office without proof of prior internship.
