Research Focus
The Institute for Machine Elements and Machine Design at the RWTH Aachen deals with research and teaching in the fields of tribology, machine elements, drive train engineering, machine dynamics and acoustics. IME does research in the foresaid fields. New knowledge is implemented focused in the areas off highway machinery as well as railway technology. The structure of the institute suits these tasks and is organised in the following way: Drive engineering, Tribology, Off-highway vehicle.
For testing of life-sized drive trains and machines, as well as the validation of newly developed calculation methods, IME is equipped with a 1 MW-dynamometer, put into operation in the end of 2010. The dynamic properties of torsional vibrations on drive trains have been studied at IME for 25 years. The resulting fundamentals developed have been integrated consistently into the software DRESP (DREhschwingungsSimulationsProgramm – torsional vibration simulation program). This powerful tool for the optimisation of drive trains is being employed by a multitude of users in the industry organized as Forschungsvereinigung Antriebstechnik e.V. (FVA), an association of more than 170 companies from the field of drive engineering.
Comprehensive information concerning current projects, contacts to the industry both domestic and abroad, as well as staff information can be found at the homepage given below. Student researchers, scientific assistants and students writing their theses can participate in these projects within the scope of their studies.
IME offers the following lectures:
- Machine design II and III
- Tribology
- Machine acoustics and dynamic causes
- Dynamics and efficiency in heavy-duty drive train engineering
