Research Focus

Applications
We develop concepts for implementation of manufacturing processes (e.g. cutting, welding, drilling) using lasers and derive requirements on future laser systems based on these concepts.

Concepts
New concepts of process implementation arise when the solution properties of the model (e.g. the rehardening and adhering of melt during cutting) can be identified with the results of the diagnosis and experimentally observed properties (e.g. recording of the thermal emissions of the cutting front with a CMOS camera).

Nonlinear Dynamics
In order to better understand the nonlinear dynamics (NLD) of laser manufacturing processes, the solution properties of equations of motion within continuum physics (e.g. movement of the phase boundaries during cutting and vaporising) are analysed.

Reduced Dynamical Systems
Reduced dynamical systems are defined through mathematical modelling of what is identified as the key structure of the solution.

Numerical Methods
In order to evaluate the approximation accuracy of the reduced dynamical systems and to identify additional effects, numerical methods are applied (e.g. level set methods for describing the motion of open phase boundaries, wavelet bases for efficient and adaptive function approximation).

Teaching
The modules "Modelling in Laser Processing" (ST, 2/2) and "Model Reduction and Simulation in Laser Processing" (WT, 2/2) cover the area of obligatory elective subjects in Production Engineering, Development and Production as well as Automation Engineering.
