Modeling in Electrochemical Process Engineering, FZ Jülich, IEK 14: Electrochemical Process Engineering

Head of the Institute

Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Werner Lehnert

Fields of Study

Energy Technology, Process Engineering

Main Focus

Modeling and Simulation of Fuel Cells, Development of High-Temperature Polymerelectrolyte Fuel Cells

Research Focus

The research focus is on modeling and simulation of fuel cells from component level up to stack level. Furthermore, we develop High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (HT-PEFC) stacks.

The research focus is on:

  • Modeling and Simulation of fuel cells on different levels. In order to decribe fluid flow in porous gas diffusion layers of low temperature fuel cells, we use Lattice Boltzmann simulation techniques. Cell and stack level modeling and simulation will be performed either with the commercial simulation tool fluent or with the open source software OpenFOAM.
  • Development of HT-PEFC stacks in a power range up to 5 kWel. These stacks can be operated either with hydrogen or middle distillate reformate.
  • Development and charactization of electrodes and membran electrode assemblies for HT-PEFC
