TESYS – Technical Energy System Analysis

Topic

Drawing on technical and scientific competencies, systems analysis can demonstrate the potential and limits of new and existing technologies, in accordance with ecological, economic and social criteria. When evaluating technological innovations, the database used is critical, as are the methods for mapping the complex system structures, taking into account all relevant interdependencies.

The primary focus is the transformation of the energy supply to a renewable basis, with designs for future-oriented technology pathways and calibrated market models. Furthermore, these research activities will be accompanied by the creation of an independent, interdisciplinary and integrated energy system analysis facility.

Research Objectives

The core objective of TESYS is to establish an independent institute for energy systems analysis that in the long term will serve as a central point of contact for the business, political and research domains. The guiding principle of the interdisciplinary work is to shape the transition to an energy supply that achieves a high level of sustainability through the use of renewable energy technologies. In order to better achieve the research objective, the competencies of the institutes involved in TESYS were grouped into the following topics:

  • Energy supply: The design of technologies for the provision of usable forms of energy, such as electricity, heat and chemical energy carriers.
  • Transmission and storage: Design of the infrastructure for the distribution of the various forms of energy, as well as their storage, including any necessary conversion processes.
  • Energetic and material use: Identification and description of all end users in the fields of industry, commerce, household and transport.
  • An overall systemic view: Design of an energy system based on holistic analyses and their evaluation in terms of technical, economic and social criteria
