CMT – Center of Molecular Transformations

Topic

The project house CMT initiates, organizes and coordinates large scale research projects at the interface of chemistry, biology and process engineering.

The aim of CMT is to foster cooperation at RWTH Aachen University between partners that can contribute knowledge to the supply chain. CMT supports the partners in their search for suitable co-operation partners within industry or academia or in fund-raising for large scale projects. Ultimately, a unique and paramount knowledge pool will be built, where new and emerging scientific questions can be addressed instantly.

Building upon an existing history of interdisciplinary research, CMT is the first systematic approach to address needs in interdisciplinary research. The work of the Scientific integration teams is focused in particular on the timeframe before the start of large scale research-projects

Aims of Research

  • Develop sustainable methods and processes for molecular transformations
  • Create value from alternative carbon resources (biomass, CO2)
  • Research integrating chemo-catalysis, bio-catalysis and process engineering on a systems level
  • Joining the Disciplines

Members

CMT consists of about 25 members contributing to the scientific excellence. They are group leaders in Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology and engineering.

CMT is open for new members that are interested in interdisciplinary research and extend their knowledge within the scope of research.

Infrastructure on hand

You find the CMT office in the “Sammelbau Biologie” in Aachen Melaten. On the Campus, the disciplines are working closely together. The buildings of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology and the new building NGP2 of the process engineering, are located here, offering the best infrastructure for large projects and collaborations.

Projects

CMT is currently involved in several large scale interdisciplinary research projects. Some examples are:

  • ACalNet, the Aachen-California Network of Academic Exchange
  • The NRW strategy project BioSC
  • Carbon2Chem®
  • GreenSolRes, a Horizon 2020-BBI-PPP project
  • Power-to-X (P2X), one of the large Kopernikus projects
  • SusChemSys 2.0 (Sustainable Chemical Synthesis), a graduate program and network
  • SINCHEM, an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate

CMT is keen to start new projects, build consortia, attract funding, and administrate ongoing projects for its members.
