Fraunhofer Institutes

Institute for Laser Technology (ILT)

With about 330 employees and more than 11,000 m² of usable floorspace the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT is worldwide one of the most important development and contract research institutes of its specific field. The activities cover a wide range of areas such as the development of new laser beam sources and components, precise laser based metrology, testing technology and industrial laser processes. This includes laser cutting, caving, drilling, welding and soldering as well as surface treatment, micro processing and rapid manufacturing.

Furthermore, the Fraunhofer ILT is engaged in laser plant technology, process control, modeling as well as in the entire system technology. We offer feasibility studies, process qualification and laser integration in customer specific manufacturing lines.

Institute for Production Technology (IPT)

The Fraunhofer IPT develops system solutions for networked, adaptive production. Clients and cooperation partners come from the entire manufacturing industry - from aerospace technology, automotive engineering and its suppliers, especially from tool and mold making, the precision engineering and optical industries, but also from the life sciences and many other sectors.

The directorship of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT lies in the hands of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. Christian Brecher. Together with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Bergs MBA, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schmitt and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirt. Ing. Günther Schuh, he forms the board of directors at the Fraunhofer IPT and the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at the RWTH Aachen. By holding this joint position, they link both institutes together to form a production technology research center that is unequaled in diversity and competencies.

Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE) - Balanced Human Systems Integration

The (Balanced) Human Systems Integration (SE) department refines user-centric approaches and unites them with technology-focused perspectives to create a seamless interaction of people, complex technical systems and processes. The aim is utility-oriented, balanced and integrated system design. At the same time, the department takes care to manage and minimize the existential risks associated with these systems.

University Professor Dr.-Ing. Frank Flemisch is in charge of the teaching and research area of system ergonomics in close cooperation with the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IAW).
