FSC – Fuel Science Center

Topic

Synthetic fuels for clean and sustainable mobility

Research Goals

The Fuel Science Center currently houses the Cluster Office and the speaker of the Cluster of Excellence "Fuel Science Center", as well as the two junior professorships "Model-based Fuel Design" and "Physico-chemical Fundamentals of Combustion".

The work in the Fuel Science Center is mainly focused on the research and development of alternative liquid fuels. The starting materials for these fuels are various renewable carbon and energy sources, whereby the developed fuels do not compete with the food chain and burn significantly cleaner than conventional fuels and enable higher motor efficiencies.

Infrastructure

The FSC provides over 1000 m² of laboratory space, including facilities for the detailed investigation of new fuels under real combustion conditions.

In addition to the expansion of the existing chemical laboratory, a high-pressure chamber for visualization of injection processes, two 1-cylinder research engines for thermodynamic investigations and two optical engines were installed. The "Rapid compression machine" (RCM) and the impact tube are operated by the junior research group "Physico-Chemical Fundamentals Of Combustion" (PCFC) under the direction of Professor Alexander Heufer. Since the FSC also has 600 m² of office space, the research group "Model-Based Fuel Design" (MBFD) of junior professor Kai Leonhard is also based at the FSC in addition to the PCFC staff.
