ZMB - Centre for Metallic Design

Topic

Metallic materials process chain (construction part life cycle)

RWTH Aachen's faculties of civil engineering; mechanical engineering, and georesources and materials engineering have strong institutes that conduct research on metallic structural materials, particularly steels, and their application in various disciplines. The research tasks and the results expected by industrial partners require a growing amount of interdisciplinary collaboration beyond the individual subject disciplines. Consideration of the production, processing, and use of materials with direct relevance to practice is also required for teaching. For this reason, the corresponding institutes have come together to form the joint association "Centre for Metallic Design (zmb)" to work on the metallic component cycle based on the following order of steps:

Material/pre-product/construction component – benchmark – production process – component back-up – operation/repair - recycling

Research Goals

At the Centre for Metallic Design research, training, and information activities come together to find new steel solutions. In application-oriented research projects, the development, production, and testing of large components made of steel and steel alloys and the development of lightweight components for transportation engineering takes place within an interdisciplinary collaboration. During regular university and continued education courses, the solutions are presented and discussed with students from different subjects and professionals from current practice. Because of this research, demonstration, and communication center, it is possible to cover the entire component life cycle and attain synergetic effects.
