JARA

Jülich Aachen Research Alliance

Focusing competence - shaping the future: in the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance, known as JARA for short, RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich have established a model that is unique in Germany in order to overcome the insularity of university and non-university research and teaching.

The Alliance has thus established a scientific environment that is in the top international league and is attractive to the best researchers. At the same time, research opportunities are opened up and projects realized that would not be possible for one partner alone. Over and above pure research, the collaboration in JARA also encompasses the fields of education, infrastructure, knowledge transfer and services. These fields create the necessary conditions for research and the applications arising from this research.

JARA currently comprises six research areas:

  1. JARA-ENERGY Sustainable Energy
  2. JARA-BRAIN brain research
  3. JARA-FIT Information Technologies of the Future
  4. JARA-HPC High Performance Computing
  5. JARA-FAME Forces and Matter Experiments
  6. JARA-SOFT Researching Soft Matter

Amongst other aspects, our scientists are currently investigating more efficient energy production and utilization, opening up possibilities for the early diagnosis and treatment of psychological and neurological diseases, developing the physical basis for new memories and processors for computers, and optimizing research and development projects through computer simulations. The two partners, RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich, thus selectively link research fields in which they have complementary expertise.

In this model of integrative partnership, scientific policy strategies are defined and coordinated. Research goals are jointly defined, investments made and academic staff appointed and trained.
