Interdisciplinary Research Partnerships

The work communities at RWTH Aachen develop and tap into new, interdisciplinary research fields that span across the faculties.  In contrast, the competence and research centers work intenstively on specific research topics and combine expertise from our institutes in scientic cooperations.

Work Communities

Center for Computational Engineering Science (CCES)

The Center for Computational Engineering Science (CCES) stimulates interdisciplinary activities linking fundamental and applied research in the field of computational engineering science, where considerable scientific advances are anticipated due to the application of mathematical modeling methods and modern computational techniques to challenging engineering problems.

The CCES is directed by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Marquardt.

Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering

The Aachen Helmholtz Institute connects interdisciplinary basic research with application-oriented research and development in biomedical engineering. Research highlights of the institute lie in diagnostics, therapy development, and the applied life sciences.

The chair of Medical Engineering at the HIA primarily works under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Radermacher in the fields of computer-assisted planning systems for therapy and biomechanics and ergonomics in medicine. In addition to the indispensable medical foundations and the development and application of modern technologies and engineering methods, aspects from product ergonomics and security are particularly attributed to the development and evaluation of medical systems of particular meaning.

Competence and Research Centers

E.ON Energy Research Center

E.ON ERC under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Müller is a beacon in the field of energy technology when it comes to research and interdisciplinary collaboration with the industry and institutions both inside and outside of the university. Through its organizational structure with five professors from four RWTH Faculties, the Center is equipped to look far beyond the edge of subject specific research and can dedicate itself particularly to technical research questions in larger systems. The ERC conducts research on regenerative systems that clearly exceeds the capacities of formerly developed power generation concepts (wind energy, photovoltaic). Socioeconomic and political aspects are also integrated into all the projects.
