CATS -Computational Analysis of Technical Systems

Head of the Institute

Univ.-Prof. Marek Behr, Ph. D.

Field of Study

Computational Engineering Science, Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering

Main Focus

computational analysis of compelx fluid phenomena with applications in biomedical, production and aerospace engineering

Research Focus

The Chair for Computational Analysis of Technical Systems focuses on modeling and simulation of incompressible flows in areo-, hydro- and hemodynamics.

The main research acitivies are in the area of:

  • blood flow modeling for ventricular assist device design, including axial and centrifugal blood pumps
  • development of blood damage and aggregation models for hematologic design
  • flow simulation and shape optimization for production processes including extrusion molding
  • development of robust computational techniques for deforming-domain fluid flow simulations
  • airflow modeling for aerospace applications, including wing and aircraft analysis
  • development of multiscale compressible flow simulation and fluid-structure coupling techniques
  • parallelization techniques for distributed memory computer architectures
  • parallel iterative solvers and preconditioning

In the Computational Engineering Science (CES) study program, CATS offers mandatory courses CES Mechanics I/II as well as advanced courses indlucing Parallel Computing for Computational Mechanics, XFEM and Finite Elements in Fluids. CATS is responsible for the mandatory course Simulation Methods in the Mechanical Engineering program jointly with AVT.PT. The Chair collaborates with partners abroad, in particular with:

  • Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Rice University, Houston, USA
  • Department of Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA
  • Department of Civil Engineering, Chuo University, Tokyo, Japan
  • MicroMed Technology, Houston, USA

Project and Bachelor/Master thesis opportunities at the Chair are available in most of the research topics listed above. The Chair is a founding member of the Center for CES (CCES) and a member of the Forum Informatik. The Chair coordinates the activities of the Excellence Initiative graduate school Aachen Institute for Advanced Study in CES and contributes to the operation of the German Research School for Simulation Sciences.
